The Children of David Kilborn (1767-1846) – Elizabeth (Kilborn) Stone (1800-1849) of Scriba, New York (Blog 73)

I descend from David’s son William Kilborn and am researching William’s siblings in the hope of learning more about my ancestors. Today’s blog is about David’s daughter Elizabeth (also known as Betsy) who was born Sept 18, 1800 in Leeds, Canada West. When her father, David, who had been arrested for spying for the United States moved to the United States in 1814, she was only 14 and accompanied him when he settled in Scriba, New York. At age 17, on October 5, 1817 she married 23 year old John Stone, the son of Major Jehiel Stone and Ruth (Norton) Stone, of Scriba, New York. John’s father had served as a Major on the American side of the War of 1812. We don’t know much about the details of their life but John’s brother Orrin Stone’s diary probably reflects a similar life to that of John and Elizabeth’s life .

We find very few sources mentioning Elizabeth or John — she is mentioned on page 262 of Payne Kenyon Kilborn’s The History and Antiquities of the Name and Family of Kilbourne, (in its Varied Orthography) and a picture of their gravestone can be found at Find A Grave.

244. BETSEY, b. in Leeds county, C. W.; m. John Stone of Scriba, Oswego Co., N. Y., where she still resides.  She has a large family.

In 1846, Elizabeth’s father, David Kilborn, died mentioning her in his will in the sixth paragraph referring to his children who had remained in the United States – his will specifies Betsy, the wife of John Stone as one of his heirs to whom he equally divided all his property.

Elizabeth died in Scriba, New York on November 30, 1849 at the age of 49. She was buried in Scriba in the Hillside Cemetery. Her tombstone reads “Wife of John Age 49 years, 2 months, 12 days.” (This image of her tombstone is being shared in this blog with permission of the photographer, Kendra, who posted it on Find A Grave.

Elizabeth’s husband remarried Almira Fox Rumrille and lived until age 77. He died on November 4, 1871 and was buried next to his first wife in the Hillside Cemetery. His part of the tombstone reads “”JOHN STONE DIED Nov. 4, 1871 AE 77 years ?? months, ? Days”.
